How Should I Tackle Playing the Final Fantasy Series?

-

I’m super excited because I just ordered the Final Fantasy Pixel remasters for my Nintendo Switch from Playasia, and I can’t wait for them to arrive! Once they do, I’ll have access to every mainline, non-MMO Final Fantasy game, including some spin-offs like FFX-2 and Type-0 (and I’m also working on getting my hands on Stranger of Paradise). I’ve decided I want to finally take the plunge and play through the entire Final Fantasy series.

I know tons of people have done this already, and I’m not trying to be original or anything. Final Fantasy has been a huge part of my life, especially the stories from FF7 to FF10, which have always been some of my all-time favorites. Sadly, I’ve only managed to beat a few of them so far.

In my experience, Final Fantasy has consistently delivered amazing stories—except for maybe FF13, but I’ve matured a bit and am more open-minded now! It saddens me to see the series decline in popularity since FF12. I’m hoping this journey will help me fall in love with the series in a brand-new way.

I’m as excited about this as I was when I got married and when my son was born (just kidding, of course!). My question is, should I play the games in order from 1 to 16, or should I go with the flow and play whichever one I feel like? What do you all think?

I don’t think FF’s popularity is declining; it just peaked during the PS1/PS2 era, and Square Enix has shifted their focus since then. As for your playthrough, it really comes down to personal preference—I’d suggest playing whatever feels right. Going in order might feel too restrictive and could make it hard to enjoy them all fully!

Yeah, it definitely seems like each new entry gets a lot of mixed reviews, and there’s often drama about sales numbers. While FF15 did really well, it’s frustrating to see the negativity around the fandom. Anyway, I think I’ll play based on what I feel like, since I’ve already finished 7, 9, and 15, so I want to focus on 8, 10, and 12.

Playing in order is one option, but honestly, you should really check out FF14: A Realm Reborn to Endwalker. The writing in that game is some of the best in the entire franchise and honestly in gaming overall!

I get that, but I’m not really into MMOs. I’ve heard I can try a good chunk of FF14 with the demo, though. Might consider it since some friends are playing.
