I haven’t used mods in about 20 years since playing Sims 3, and I’m a bit overwhelmed now. I downloaded a bunch of mods for Baldur’s Gate 3 for extra classes, races, clothes, and hair because I thought the game was stable and those mods were officially supported. But now that Patch 8 is out, people say the mods might cause major problems and break saves. I have characters with modded classes and races like blood sorcerers, fallen assimar durges, star druids, devas, nymphs, shadar kais, and I even modded some multiplayer runs with my boyfriend after Act 2. I’m worried—what do I do? Can I disable mods and still keep my characters? Will modded saves survive? Can I safely play or should I wait? I’m confused because I thought since the mods appeared in the main menu, they’d be less risky than usual.

The safest move right now is to pause your current modded runs for a bit. Give mod creators some time to update their mods for Patch 8 compatibility—this usually takes a few weeks. Meanwhile, you could start a fresh, unmodded playthrough so you don’t miss out on the game entirely. Once mods get updated, you can try updating your mods and loading your save to see if everything still works.
Generally, you can’t just remove mods in the middle of a save file. The changes those mods made (new classes, races, items) get baked into your save, so if you disable them, things might break. I’d suggest either sticking with Patch 7 if you can or starting a new game without mods on Patch 8 until things stabilize. On Steam, you might be able to opt out of the update to patch 7 if you want to finish your current run safely, but consoles might not have that option. Hopefully modders will patch their mods soon, but it could take a few days or even weeks.
Ugh, that’s disappointing but good to know. I guess I’ll just hold off for now and see what happens.
So if I update the game but don’t open my modded saves right away, that should keep them safe? What if I want to test which mods still work or disable some? Will the saves be totally broken? Also, can I roll back to the previous patch if Patch 8 causes too many problems? I’m new to this whole thing.
