I just started playing Destiny 2 recently and I’ve been wondering how much I should care about my gear right now. I currently have only blue armor and I’m hesitant to change it because I’m worried about messing up my stats or making my character weaker. Should I be focusing on getting better stats on my armor or just wear whatever looks good for now? How important is gear progression early on?

Fashion comes much later once you’re geared up with solid stats. Early on, focus on finishing campaigns like Beyond Light and Shadowkeep and raising your power level. Once you’re around the soft cap (around 2010 power), that’s when you can start thinking about stats and builds. Also, using a Ghost mod to find armor that boosts resilience or discipline can help, but don’t stress it too much early on — just keep leveling and experimenting.
At the start, gear stats aren’t a huge deal. Just focus on equipping armor with the highest power level you can find to increase your effectiveness. Don’t stress over the specific stats yet. For weapons, use whatever you find fun and go with that; you can optimize later once you understand perks and playstyles more.
To sum it up: don’t worry about blue armor being ‘bad’ right now. Replace it whenever you find higher power armor. The main things early on are to get your Guardian level up so you can use mods and improve your gear, progressively beat campaigns, and raise your power towards the soft cap. Later you can look for armor with stats in the mid-60s and perfect your build. For now, just enjoy playing and upgrading naturally!
In PvE, resilience is really the only stat that matters early on. Higher resilience helps you survive better. So if you get armor with resilience or mods that boost it, that’s a good boost. But honestly, just getting your power level up by replacing old armor with higher level stuff will make the biggest difference for now. Once your gear hits around 2010 to 2020 light, you can start focusing more on specific stats like resilience, discipline, and maybe recovery.
You don’t need to worry too much about your gear at the start. The game actually gives you some decent legendary armor early on during the Pale Hearth campaign. Just try to get high resilience and recovery stats if possible, with discipline or strength as secondary priorities. However, if it’s tricky to get both resilience and recovery early, prioritize resilience and discipline. Don’t overthink it, just keep upgrading your gear as you go!
