Hey everyone! I’ve got some questions about the Overwatch rules in Warhammer, and I want to make sure I’m playing fairly. Here’s what I’m trying to clarify:
1) When my opponent starts moving their units, can I wait to see where they go before I declare my Overwatch? Or do I have to declare Overwatch the instant they touch their unit? What if I’m still deciding and they move? I know I can declare Overwatch at the end if I see them, but sometimes it’s better to declare it at the start if they’re in a good hiding spot.
2) Let’s say I want to move a unit from point A to B, but an enemy could Overwatch me if I go to B. So I decide to move to C instead. If I start moving my unit and only place some models in C, but my opponent Overwatches me at the start of the move, can I then change my mind and say I’m going to B instead? Since I got new information, I’m confused about this.
3) Regarding the charging phase, I understand Overwatch is declared at the start or end of the charge move. So do I need to wait for my opponent to roll for their charge? If they fail the charge roll, can I still use Overwatch? I think I should be able to wait for the roll before deciding on Overwatch, but I’m not sure.
Am I on the right track?

1+2. You can’t wait and see where they’re moving before declaring Overwatch. You have to declare it as soon as they choose the unit. Otherwise, you’re getting info you shouldn’t have. And for the movement, once your opponent begins their movement, it’s too late to declare Overwatch, so you’d have to stick to your original move.
3. Actually, there was a recent update, and now you can use Overwatch even if the charge fails. It’s declared when the unit declares the charge, not after they roll. So, you can go ahead with that.
Thanks for the clarity!
When your opponent picks a unit for movement, that’s when you need to declare your Overwatch. If you’re thinking while they move, just tell them to give you a sec to decide. For the second scenario, you can’t scramble your move after they’ve declared Overwatch at the start; that’s just part of the risk you take. And about the charge phase, you nailed it — Overwatch happens once they declare the charge, before any rolls happen.
Very clear, thanks for that!
Just confirming, regarding the charge — you should roll Overwatch as soon as they declare the charge. GW changed that part of the wording recently, so now it’s all about the declaration. No waiting to see if the roll is successful or not; that would be unfair.
Didn’t notice that change before! You’re right, no waiting to see if it’s successful. Thanks!
3. Yeah, they updated the rules, so Overwatch can be used when a charge is declared now. Just keep an eye on those changes!
