How Do You Salvage Debris?

There are pieces of old machines and ships all over the place near where I started the game. What are you meant to do with all of this stuff? I have been able to find the odd functional thing like a tether pack but I don’t know how I am meant to do something with the debris themselves. Is there a way to turn them into resources?

You can use the shredder to make something of them, but this is an item you will unlock much later in the game. If you want to get ahead of things, dig a hole near your base and you can chuck all of the junk you find into it for use later on when you gain access to a shredder.
