I have made it as far as the farmhouse and there is a path nearby that is blocked by a stack of orange boxes. I have found a similar roadblock down a few other paths. It doesn’t seem like it is possible to even interact with them, but there is obviously stuff down there. I’m stuck right now so I am wondering how to clear the orange boxes that block the way?

They will move automatically as you progress through the game and complete puzzles. The first occurrence of this happens when you restore power to the farmhouse. This will give you access to a CD and when you get this a message will appear, letting you know a new area has opened up.
