I’ve been a fan of The Sims 3 for about 14 years now, but I often feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of expansion packs available. I love playing, but it can get a bit much to juggle everything. I’d also like to know about The Sims 4; there seems to be so much to explore, and I’m not sure where to begin. Any tips for someone who’s been around for a while?

I haven’t added any new packs lately because I feel the game is bloated enough as it is! Honestly, I find it better to prioritize what you want to focus on before moving to a new pack. I’m holding off on buying anything else until I’ve had my fill of what I have. The waiting can be a bit of a reward in itself, and it can save you some cash too. Remember, the packs aren’t going anywhere, so don’t rush it!
I totally relate! I grabbed the Sims 2 anniversary pack recently, and wow, it was a lot to take in. I used to play Sims 2 back in the day, but having all those expansions at once was overwhelming. I think it’d be great if we could toggle packs on and off to familiarize ourselves with them more gradually. For Sims 4, I’ve kept it simple with just a few packs, so it doesn’t feel overwhelming to me.
For Sims 4, James Turner has a fantastic tool where you can select specific packs to play with, which can help avoid overwhelming yourself. He even has a YouTube video that shows how to use it, which is great if you’re a visual learner. Though I don’t usually feel overwhelmed, focusing on one pack at a time has helped me really dive into its contents!
You might want to give the legacy challenge a shot! It can be a fun way to focus on different expansions with each new generation. I know it’s a blast in Sims 3, though I haven’t tried it in 4 yet.
I understand the feeling of being overwhelmed when new packs drop and that FOMO kicks in, but I’ve learned to focus on the packs that actually interest me. For example, I skipped the horse pack because it didn’t appeal to me, but I grabbed the life after death pack because I knew I’d have fun with it. Just do a little research, see what each pack offers, and choose what you really want to play.
One cool strategy I’ve found is to create a Sim whose main goal is to explore the content of just one expansion pack at a time. I dedicate a save file to that Sim, dive into the pack, then save that Sim to my library. When I return to my main save, I can add them in, and it really enriches my world with crafted townies who have specialties!
Oh wow, that’s awesome! I love this idea.
A strategy I’ve adopted is having each household focus on different aspects of the game, like city life, farm life, or even horse enthusiasts. It makes every household’s gameplay more enjoyable and varied!
Yeah, I was really excited for the Sims 2 too, but I found it hard to keep up because there were so many expansions! Being able to activate them at your own pace would be awesome.
