How do you make your character jump? Pressing the usual button just makes you open the command menu. Surely there is a way to jump over enemy attacks and obstacles?

Jumping happens automatically in Final Fantasy VII. You will see an icon with arrows on it that signals you can jump over something. Run up to this and the action will happen automatically. There is no button to make your character jump on demand.
