I’ve recently returned to Hearthstone and I’m having a tough time dealing with Protoss Mage decks. They seem incredibly powerful, especially with their ability to deal massive burst damage—sometimes upwards of 12 damage returned to their hand. I’m struggling to figure out how to counter them effectively. Are there any reliable counters or strategies to handle Protoss Mage, or should I just accept taking heavy burst damage?

Honestly, if you find Protoss Mage is the worst you’ve faced in any game, then you’re lucky! Every card game has those archetypes that straight-up give you trouble. No deck beats everything, so sometimes you just have to pick some counters to deal with problematic matchups. A quick Google search could help, but I get it when all the info feels overwhelming. The key is trying aggressive decks or using disruption cards like Dirty Rat and focusing on early game pressure to keep them from setting up.
A solid approach is to either aggro them early or build up a huge health and armor pool so their burst won’t be enough to kill you. Leech Death Knight decks can sustain health well into the 50s, and Wheel Warlock builds crazy armor, so they’re decent choices. Also, Dirty Rat is useful since Protoss Mage usually runs only a couple Colossus, and pulling one out early can force a concession. Just keep in mind, it’s tough because the Mage thrives on burst and combos, so patience and timing with your removal matter a lot.
If you think 12 damage burst is bad, you’re in for a bumpy ride. I’ve seen Protoss Mages do double that before, hitting 16 damage in one burst. If you’re running an armor-based deck like Armor Wheelock, the damage might not seem as painful, but it can absolutely end games quickly if you’re not prepared. It’s all about predicting and managing their combos.
Protoss Mage can be brutal, especially if you’re playing slower decks. The best way to beat them is usually by applying early pressure with an aggressive or tempo deck like Egg Hunter or Aggro Paladin. These decks can rush them down before they get key cards out. If you want to go a bit more unconventional, Zarimi Priest is also known to counter Protoss Mage pretty well, though it’s a toxic deck choice. Running cards like Dirty Rat can sometimes help by disrupting their board, but it’s not a guaranteed win. Basically, try to end the game before they assemble their combo or get too much burst.
Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll definitely look into those deck types when I get the chance.
Heads up: Protoss Mage actually favours matchups against Leech DK since the health pool they generate isn’t quite enough to survive the burst. If you try this, make sure your rats hit the Colossus to really turn the tables.
