I’ve been using an Xbox account linked to my dad’s email for years and have built up quite a library of games. Unfortunately, Microsoft told me I can’t switch that email to mine since I already have another Xbox account with my email. So, I created a fresh account but noticed that all the games from my dad’s account still appear in the library when I’m logged into my new account. I’m confused about whether I’ll lose access to those games if I log out of my dad’s account. I really want to keep and use the games I’ve bought. I heard something about game sharing, but I’m not clear on how it works. Which Xbox should I set as the home Xbox, and under which account? What does making an Xbox the home Xbox actually do? Any help would be really appreciated!

Game sharing is super useful! You can share your games with accounts on the same Xbox if you set the home Xbox right. Adding accounts to a family sharing setup can also help if you want to share Xbox Live and Game Pass. Just make sure your family accounts are on the same physical Xbox, as that’s how it works. You can game share with other accounts outside the family as well, which is a nice backup option if needed!
When you’re logged into any account on the Xbox, you can set it as your ‘home Xbox’. This means that any account that’s logged in can access all the games and content from the account that set it as home, including your dad’s games. So don’t worry too much, as long as your dad’s account is set as the home Xbox, you’ll still have access to those games even when using your new account.
Just to clarify, if you log out of your dad’s account, you won’t lose access to the games as long as the Xbox remains set as ‘home’ for his account. If he were to change the home setting to a different Xbox, then you’d be in trouble!
That sounds great! But how many accounts can be in a family share? And do they need to be on the same physical Xbox to work?
