I’m trying to figure out how to stream games from my gaming PC to my 4K HDR TV using a Steam Deck. My gaming rig has a primary monitor that only supports 3440×1440 resolution, which seems to be causing some issues with streaming at 4K. I can’t set games to stream in 4K because my PC can’t support that resolution natively. I’ve already attempted to create a custom 4K resolution through the NVIDIA control panel, but it fails since my monitor won’t recognize it. I’ve also experimented with using a virtual display driver and software like Moonlight for streaming, but nothing has worked consistently. Does anyone have experience with a similar setup or advice on how to make this work?

If you’re using the Apollo or Moonlight setup, you can create a virtual monitor set to 4K. I personally found it easier to unplug my monitor before bed and then boot into the virtual monitor setup, which seamlessly detected my Steam Deck’s 16:10 display. This solved all my issues! You should check out some YouTube tutorials on setting up Apollo or Moonlight; it’s pretty straightforward!
This sounds like a solid plan!
If Apollo isn’t working out for you, consider trying out this Virtual Display Driver available on GitHub. It’s versatile and can be used for other purposes too, might be worth a shot!
I faced a similar problem before switching to the Apollo fork of Moonlight. It totally fixed my issues and improved the performance streaming from my gaming rig. Honestly, I loved it so much that I ended up rack mounting my gaming PC in the garage and now use an Ubuntu client at my monitor. I can stream to another TV or my office client without stress!
Thanks for the tip! I’m going to download Apollo and try it out.
