How Do I Get Started with Tabletop RPGs Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

-

Hey everyone! I’m just diving into the world of tabletop RPGs, and I recently picked up the Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG books. I’m really excited to get into it, but it feels a bit overwhelming. I’d love some advice on the best ways to start learning how to play, especially for someone new to these types of games. I bought some dice, lol! Any suggestions or resources that might help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the community! If you’ve played DnD or similar RPGs before, starting a new game like Buffy isn’t too hard. Just read the rules, gather some friends, and jump in! If you’re totally new to TTRPGs, I recommend watching actual play videos on YouTube or listening to podcasts about them. You could also check out a local game store for beginner sessions—they often run both paid and free intro games! Plus, check out Matt Colville’s Running the Game series on YouTube to get insights on being a GM.

Thanks so much! I’ve seen a couple of games online, but I’m still figuring out the details. I’ll definitely check out some podcasts and YouTube videos!

Lucky you! Buffy is an amazing game, and the system is pretty straightforward. Plus, you’ve got 12 seasons of the show to inspire your storytelling! While I’m not sure about any Unisystem live plays on YouTube, I’ve run multiple Buffy RPG campaigns, so feel free to ask me any questions—I’m here to help!

Buffy is such a fun game! The rulebook does a solid job of breaking things down, so that’s a great place to start. Also, there’s tons of resources out there now—books, podcasts, YouTube shows, and even forums where you can ask questions! Just dive into the rulebook, and don’t hesitate to drop back here for any specific questions you might have!

I totally get where you’re coming from! I started in 2018 and have been running games since 2019. I’d suggest starting with rules-light systems—they’re more accessible and can help you understand how TTRPGs are structured. Check out games like Monster of the Week, Kids on Bikes, or Slayers for lightweight options. Once you’re comfortable, you can dive into more complex systems like DnD, Cyberpunk, or Call of Cthulhu for more depth!

Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll look into those!
