I’m planning to dive back into Final Fantasy VI on the SNES, but there’s something I’m not clear on regarding Strago’s spell-learning abilities. Specifically, how does he learn spells from enemies? I’ve seen a video demonstrating it, but I’m wondering if there’s a specific level he needs to be at, certain equipment, the composition of my party, or if there’s something else I should keep in mind?

To teach Strago enemy spells, all he needs to do is see the enemy use the ability during battle. Unlike other blue mages, he doesn’t need to take a hit from the attack. But keep in mind, if he’s knocked out or affected by statuses like petrification when the spell is used, he won’t learn it. Also, you must win the battle—running away will mean no spell learning for him!
Strago’s lore learning is not based on his level, party, or gear, which is great! Just make sure he’s conscious to witness the enemy’s spell. Interestingly, he can also learn some abilities from Gau and Relm by just watching them cast, which is a neat little detail!
It’s important to remember that Strago learns enemy abilities, not magical spells from Espers. There are only around 24 abilities for him to learn, and he needs to be alert during the fight. So, if he can’t see the spell being cast due to status effects or if he gets KO’d, it won’t work.
