I just got this game for PS5 to play with a friend, and we ran into some players with fancy skins who wrecked our ship while we were just exploring in our underwear! After respawning, they came back to finish us off. I feel like we could’ve avoided this if we had used proximity chat, but I’m confused about how to chat with my friend in a party while also using that. Is there a way to communicate privately with my friend and then switch to the public chat when we need it?

If you start a party and switch to game chat, you can also enable voice-to-text for proximity chat. This way, any chatter from in-game players will appear as text for you, helping you keep track of conversations without needing to leave your party entirely. You just won’t be able to reply back while you’re in the party.
On console, it looks like you have to switch back and forth manually between party chat and game chat. Create a party chat or use Discord, and when you encounter other players, switch to game chat. You can use the speaking trumpet, holding the left trigger to whisper so that only nearby players can hear you. It’s kind of annoying since once you’re in a party or Discord chat, you won’t hear in-game players unless you switch over yourself.
Using Discord is an option, but remember that it might require a PC with a push-to-talk feature. If you’re on console, you still need to switch manually between chats.
Honestly, those players were just doing their thing, which is what some people expect in the game. If you’re worried about PvP encounters, maybe try safer zones before you dive into parts of the game that have player-versus-player action.
