I’m struggling to find a solution for changing game controls on my Steam Deck. Games like No Man’s Sky have official layouts using complex Action Sets, causing issues when I want to customize controls. For example, in Action Sets, the ‘A’ button does different things depending on the scenario (e.g., confirming choices in menus and jumping when on foot). I’d like to map my track pads to buttons more uniformly. Usually, I can just map ‘Down Button’ to ‘A,’ but with Action Sets, ‘A’ doesn’t seem to register universally. Switching to a default configuration like ‘Gamepad With Joystick’ makes the controller unresponsive, and it seems the game is enforcing Action Sets. Is there a way to disable these Action Sets entirely? I tried deleting them, but one always remains as the default. Any tips would be appreciated!

It’s possible that the game has a built-in dependency on Action Sets for its controls on Steam Deck. This could be why switching to a generic gamepad layout isn’t working out. Even if you remove all Action Sets, one might remain because the game defaults to it. Unfortunately, it seems like these complex layouts are integrated specifically for Steam’s platform, making it tough to bypass them completely without losing input functionality.
Have you tried restarting the game after changing to a basic gamepad layout? Often, with Steam input configurations, a restart might be necessary to get everything to work. Sometimes, without a restart, the new layout won’t register correctly and results in no input response.
