I’ve been turning on open crew after leaving the outpost, but I’m curious about how people are joining me mid-session. It looks like the only way to start with an open crew from the main menu is to begin a new session. I’m playing on Xbox, just in case that’s important.
I did some digging and it seems like it just depends on luck whether being matched puts you on a new ship or one that’s already out at sea. Somehow, I must have just never joined a ship mid-voyage. Thanks to everyone who chimed in!

The folks joining you probably don’t have their own ship, so it makes more sense for them to just hop into someone else’s game. But, I could be mistaken about that!
If you choose to charter an open crew from the matchmaking menu, you might either land in a default/captained lobby at the outpost or get placed on a ship that’s already at sea. The only surefire way to avoid ending up on another ship is to captain your own ship, which will drop you in the tavern with your vessel.
I usually just go into open crew and keep switching until I find a captained ship. Sometimes I get thrown right into the action, but other times I wake up in the tavern.
When you’re already in the game, just pull up your menu and go to My Crew. You can vote to change your crew type, and if you’re solo, it’ll automatically switch you over to open crew. Just curious though, when you do that, how do the others manage to join you?
