I’m trying to download Zenless Zone Zero from its official website, but I keep running into issues. After downloading, I launched it through Proton and ended up with a downloader for Hoyoplay. After installing Hoyoplay, I was finally able to download the game. However, when I tried to access the main game, it seems to only exist within Hoyoplay’s files, and I can’t find it directly on my Steam Deck.
My theory is that the game files are nested within each other, and last time I deleted the initial installer, it took everything with it. I’m looking for a way to separate the main game from Hoyoplay and install it directly on the Deck or if there’s a better method to download Zenless Zone Zero. Would using a different version of Proton help?

You can create a folder on your desktop called “games” and install the game there. During the install, look for the Z or D drive—it should show your desktop. If you initiate the installer once to make its prefix and then close it, you can drag your “games” folder to the prefix’s “C” drive. When you install again, you should be able to target that folder directly. It sounds complicated, but it’s pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it!
Proton creates a unique environment for each game, which is why you’re seeing that separate file structure with Hoyoplay. The easiest way to handle this would be to add Hoyoplay to your Steam library as a launcher for all three related games. Alternatively, you can try to locate and add each game’s main executable directly to Steam by right-clicking it and selecting “Add to Steam.” Just a heads up, I’m not too familiar with the specifics of Hoyoplay, but that’s a solid approach!
I’m having the same situation! I couldn’t find Hoyoplay except for through the downloader. I’m also confused about how to navigate those file depths.
I’m not sure what drives you’re talking about. Those parts of the app don’t seem visible on my Steam Deck, and it sounds like it’s all handled by the fake Windows environment Proton created.
