I’ve been playing Rocket League for about 27 hours and am currently around Silver 3 or Gold 1 rank. I mainly use the Fennec and usually play casual 3v3 matches. My highest score so far is about 700 points with 6 or 7 goals in a game. I can do some aerials but struggle with defending and often mess up when going into the air. Some games I feel like I’m carrying the team, but other times I feel lost. I’m wondering if joining tournaments is worth it to get better, and any tips on improving my gameplay overall would be great.

I know you main the Fennec and are hesitant about switching cars, but if you ever want a bit of a change, some people recommend trying the Dominus for learning because it’s easier to predict the car’s hitbox and ball control. That said, if you’re more comfortable with the Fennec and it’s working for you, stick with it. The main thing is just consistent practice and focusing on fundamentals rather than worrying about the car or getting fancy.
If you’re really looking to level up, trying 1v1 or 2v2 matches might help, since they force you to improve positioning and ball control more than 3v3 casuals. Also, avoid chasing flashy moves early on—focus on keeping possession, shooting from different angles, and learning bounce dribbles. Dodge sparingly to maintain control. I’ve found casual games can be inconsistent in terms of competition, so hopping into competitive matches could push you to develop better habits too.
Thanks for the advice! I think I’ll try 2v2 next and focus on positioning more than flying around.
At your level, the best advice is to keep your feet on the ground most of the time. A lot of players your rank get too overeager flipping or trying crazy aerials when it’s not needed. Instead, focus on reading opponents and teammates, follow the play, and go for simple touches like single jumps or 50/50 challenges when necessary. The key is patience and watching how others move rather than chasing the ball all the time. Try to get comfortable dribbling and controlling the ball on the ground before diving into wild aerial stuff.
First off, definitely turn off camera shake if you haven’t already, it really helps with controlling your view. Also, set up comfortable controls early on so you can focus on the game instead of fumbling your bindings. Spending some time in freeplay just messing around with ball control and car handling is really useful. It might sound basic but getting a feel for how your car interacts with the ball lays a solid foundation. And don’t stress, 27 hours isn’t much in the grand scheme, so just enjoy the game and keep practicing.
Yeah I tried Dominus early on but didn’t like it much. Fennec feels better to me right now so I’ll keep at it.
