I’m trying to introduce my dad to video games since he spends a lot of time on TikTok. He loved playing Spyro back in the day and is currently enjoying the Nathan Drake Collection. However, he’s having some trouble with the camera controls because he hasn’t played since the original PlayStation, and this is his first time using a PS4. When I try to teach him, he gets overwhelmed and just mashes buttons, especially during battles. I’m looking for recommendations on games that might help him improve his dualshock 4 skills or if I should consider starting with games that have locked cameras instead.

For camera control practice, try games with turn-based combat and free-camera like Divinity: Original Sin or Marvel’s Midnight Suns. They let players control the camera without needing fast reflexes. Journey is also fantastic for exploring without combat stress.
Instead of jumping right into modern titles, maybe look for games that feel familiar to him, like remakes of classics. It might help bridge the gap. Retro games could also be a hit! Things like Tony Hawk Pro Skater or Mario games often have straightforward controls.
I think the Crash Bandicoot trilogy remake would be perfect for him. It’s nostalgic and has easy controls that align closely with Spyro. Also, Blue Fire might be fun; it’s got some neat parkour mechanics that could keep him engaged while learning.
Portal is a great choice! It’s simple enough to grasp the mechanics, and the puzzles can be a fantastic way for him to practice using the camera without too much pressure. I actually learned camera controls from it myself.
You could try introducing him to Fallout 3! It has a slower pace and the VATS system allows him to engage in combat without feeling too rushed. This way, he can focus on getting comfortable with the controls and enjoy the game at his own speed.
To help him with camera control, spend some time just letting him explore environments. Have him look around at different objects in-game using the right stick. Play a little eye spy, and soon he’ll get the hang of it like riding a bike!
I agree! Portal and games like Skyrim really make it easier to get the hang of first-person cameras. They don’t overwhelm you.
