I’m feeling disconnected from my gamer identity lately. I mostly play on easy mode and often rely on guides to get through games. It’s frustrating because I’m not even that old, but my patience for tough challenges is just gone. My friends keep suggesting games like Elden Ring and Black Myth: Wukong, but they feel too difficult and slow-paced for me, and I get bored. I don’t want to be seen as someone who only plays casual games like Animal Crossing or farming sims; I want to embrace the title of ‘true gamer.’ But I also crave progress in games and want to avoid tedious grinding. What should I do to reclaim that feeling?

It sounds like you’re in a gaming burnout phase. Sometimes you need to refresh your palate—maybe play something completely different or take a break from gaming for a bit. When you come back, you might find that spark again or discover new games that you enjoy more without the pressure of being a ‘true gamer.’
Honestly, if you’re playing games, you’re already a gamer! It doesn’t matter if you’re not slaying bosses on the hardest difficulty or using no guides. If you’re having fun, that’s all that matters. Don’t let others’ opinions define your experience.
Yeah, I hear you. But I feel like I should be able to conquer those tough games to prove my worth as a gamer!
Just play what you enjoy! No need to focus on labels like ‘real gamer.’ Some people enjoy easy or casual games, and that’s perfectly fine. If you’re getting bored, maybe it’s time to explore different genres. There’s no shame in playing games at your own pace.
But I feel like I get bored easily and can’t stick with any game that gets challenging!
I hear you! I tried taking a break, but then I just feel guilty for not gaming.
