I’m about level 103 and fairly new to Fallout 76, playing for around 2 months. I’m using a commando build and have the Shattered Grounds perk but only one addiction so far. The problem is, every time I shoot Hugo Stoltz, his health slowly recovers, and I end up wasting a ton of ammo and stimpacks trying to beat him. Despite my efforts, I just can’t get past him. What strategies or tips am I missing to finally take him down? Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Yeah, Hugo is known for resetting his health multiple times during the fight. The key is gearing up with loads of ammo because you’ll need it — I usually bring around 2000 rounds or more. When he switches to melee, just stay on the platform and shoot down at him since he sticks to the ground floor. Be ready with backup weapons like a shishkebab for when your ammo runs low. It’s definitely a stamina and ammo battle more than a quick kill.
Hugo is definitely one of the tougher bosses in the game, mainly because he’s got multiple health regen phases and switches up his weapons. Those little energy bolts from his weather machine actually heal him, so try to avoid standing near them. Ammo and stimpacks are a must-have since he’s a huge bullet sponge. If you can get power armor, that’ll help a ton with damage resistance. Also, try to stay patient — he regenerates health twice before finally going down. Using VATS to target his head if you have enough action points can speed things up. Make sure to add some health-boosting perks too; there’s one in Intelligence that makes stimpacks heal faster which is pretty handy. If you need to, feel free to level up a bit more and come back stronger — eventually, with persistence, you’ll get him.
Thanks so much! Glad to hear I’m not just terrible at this haha. I’ve got the Ticket to Revenge railway rifle but always end up pulled back to Shattered Grounds — gonna try being more patient and defensive like you said.
Make sure your armor is up to snuff! Having a decent legendary set can make the fight much easier. If you don’t have power armor yet, it might be worth doing the Brotherhood quest line first to get a full set for better damage resistance. Hugo hits hard and won’t mess around, so taking some hits but also surviving is important. Also, if you’re a ghoul, it might change how you handle healing, but otherwise, try to optimize your build and perks for survival and damage output. Don’t be shy about farming a bit more legendary loot before facing him again.
What helped me was just constantly moving around the arena. Hugos attacks are brutal if you stand still. Keep strafing and running in circles while pumping shots at him. I used a tesla gun and that seemed to do decent damage. It’s slower but effective. The melee stage at the end is rough, so stay on the platform and shoot him from above when he comes up. Don’t get discouraged, it can be frustrating but just keep at it!
Haha, I’m definitely running around like crazy already! I’ve got a tesla rifle but it feels slow against the Lost mobs around sometimes. Didn’t think about using the tesla tactical shotgun though — might give that a go with my shotgun perks.
Thanks! I’m definitely gonna stock up on ammo more, 2000 rounds almost got me there but then I ran out and had to switch to the shishkebab at the end lol.
