I’m eager to jump into The Witcher 3, but I tend to like knowing the full story from the start before playing any game series. I understand that The Witcher games take place after the books, and many characters from the games originally appear in the books. However, I’m not really a book person, and reading all the Witcher novels seems daunting, especially given Sapkowski’s writing style. So, I’m wondering if there’s a good way to grasp the essential story—like watching summaries or playing the first two games. Should I bother with the books or is it enough to just play the first two games and then dive into Witcher 3? I’m just looking for the most efficient route without getting too overwhelmed. No judgment for not wanting to read the books, please!

I felt The Witcher 3 was just one long cutscene that turned me off at times, but I still loved the story. It might be worth trying it out and seeing if that works for you!
I’d suggest watching a lore summary of the books first, then playing The Witcher 1 and 2. Those games have some cool stories and gameplay that I think you’d enjoy better than just watching cutscenes alone.
Playing all three games in order is the best if you can manage it. But if that’s not an option, there are tons of lore videos on YouTube that can fill you in quickly. I actually started with Witcher 3 without knowing much, just Googled events when NPCs mentioned them, and it worked out fine.
Honestly, just dive into The Witcher 3 right away. It’s designed so newcomers can enjoy it without needing the backstory. Think of it like watching a movie adaptation without reading the book first. If you’re bent on knowing everything though, maybe watch a quick lore video.
You can check out the sources like the books or various YouTube lore videos. Take some time to enjoy those and get familiar with the world—there’s a lot out there to explore!
