I recently ran into a frustrating situation with my Steam Deck. I didn’t actually delete my .local folder—just renamed it because a Windows app running through Proton couldn’t detect hidden folders. However, when I tried changing the name back, I faced a ton of issues. My Emudeck app and emulators aren’t showing up anymore, and to even run Emudeck, I find myself having to reinstall it each time. I can’t seem to locate the .desktop file or find my applications even though they appear to be downloaded. I’m considering doing a full OS restore from a recovery image, but I’ve tried making multiple bootable USBs without success. I’m somewhat familiar with Linux, but this has been a real headache. I just wish my files would reappear instead of having to start from scratch!

The recovery image seems pretty picky about the USB drive. If you haven’t already, consider getting a known working USB drive or even trying a microSD card as a boot device; some users reported that worked for them when USBs failed. And honestly, if you didn’t create a folder, it’s better not to mess with it!
There’s actually a setting in Proton that allows you to view hidden folders, which could save you next time. Just a heads up! Might help you avoid this hassle in the future.
Sigh, noted for next time. My Deck was beautiful. People don’t understand. Now it’s like she has dementia. I wish I thought things through better.
You can try copying and pasting a path in the filename field within the ‘pick file’ dialog of Wine apps; that usually helps navigate to the right hidden directory. Also, think about setting up a symbolic link to make things easier next time. And just so you know, SteamOS has a reset feature in its boot menu that can quickly reset your device without needing a USB.
Thank you so much! I wish I thought to use a symbolic link. I’ll definitely try the erase user data option before wiping everything with a USB. Appreciate it!
You’re right! This experience has taught me a lot. I have tons of stuff on my deck that I’d hate to lose. I appreciate the link for the USB; I’ll be ordering it soon.
