I recently upgraded my copy of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to the Switch 2 version since it was available for free on my main account due to my NSO Expansion subscription. I’m currently playing on my secondary account (let’s call it ‘Alt’) because I wanted to avoid messing up my main save. However, when I try to load TotK on my Alt profile, I get a message saying that it can’t be played after checking if it’s eligible. I can’t find any clear option to undo the Switch 2 upgrade or allow my Alt account to access the game. Is it true that if one family member upgrades, everyone else gets locked out?

Is your Switch 2 set as the primary console for the account that purchased the upgraded version? That could be affecting your access.
Oh no, this sounds like a hassle! I’m worried I might run into this problem too when I upgrade.
I heard that the Switch 2 version runs differently with virtual cards. You might need to eject the virtual game card that’s linked to the Switch 2 and try playing it on your Alt account. According to Nintendo, you should be able to choose which system to use just like with a physical card. But it can get a bit tricky if you only have one system!
Are you using virtual game cards instead of the online licensing system? The VGCs behave like regular physical game cards, so any DLC or upgrades become tied to that card.
You might want to try deleting the Switch 2 upgrade. It’s possible that it’s being treated as DLC, and could have restrictions related to virtual game cards. I don’t have extensive experience with this, so I’m not entirely sure, but it’s worth a shot!
Seriously, it’s so confusing! I had to create a whole new Nintendo account for my alt just to manage all this. It feels like an endless loop of account switching and I don’t even get to enjoy the upgraded version on my other account. What’s the point of going through all these hoops?
