Hey everyone, I’ve been playing TerraFirmaGreg, a Minecraft modpack loaded with over 200 mods, but I’m struggling with constant game crashes and full system freezes. The only way to recover is by hitting the physical restart button on my PC, which is so frustrating!
The game loads just fine, and I can explore my world for about 2-5 seconds. I usually hit my FPS cap of 70 without any issues, but then everything freezes randomly, and my computer becomes unresponsive. It’s not due to high memory or GPU usage, since both hover around 70%, which I thought was fine.
I’ve checked the Minecraft logs for any clues but found nothing useful. I’ve tried adjusting RAM allocation, playing with shaders turned on and off, but nothing seems to help. I didn’t have these problems on Windows, and it’s annoying because my specs aren’t bad: I’m running on Kubuntu 24.04 LTS with an AMD Ryzen 7, an NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super, and 16 GB of RAM.
I’d love to hear from other Minecraft modpack players if you have any tips! Is there a specific JRE for Linux? Could JVM arguments make a difference?

What launcher are you using? If you’re not on Prism, give it a shot! You could also try starting a new map in case there’s a broken chunk crashing the game, especially around where you log in. Honestly, I don’t think it’s a Linux problem; I installed the pack on my Steam Deck and ran it with Prism and just 6GB allocated without any crashes.
Prism is definitely the best for these kinds of modpacks! You could also look into your Java version. Sometimes, ensuring you have the latest version can help iron out random bugs. Good luck!
I’m on Prism already. But TerraFirmaGreg is super complex. Loading a new world won’t really stress-test it. You’d need many machines and complex setups to truly replicate the intricacies of my usual gameplay.
