I’m brand new to Path of Exile and was following fubgun’s shadow cobra lash build. It worked well during the campaign, but I struggled with how skills operated, especially concerning finding the right gear with connected sockets of the correct colors. I kept using mostly the same gear throughout the campaign, which is just a classic new player issue. Now that I’ve finished the campaign, I’ve hit the maps, and the first map wiped the floor with me. I thought it was time to switch from cobra lash to lightning strike, so I spent all my respec points and even traded for some chaos to grab extra regret orbs. However, I’ve run into a major problem: the lightning strike build requires completely different shader colors for links, and honestly, my gear is terrible—I’m still using white gloves just because they have 4 green links! Now I’m stuck; my old skills are useless, and I don’t have the right gear for the new skills. Am I totally screwed? Should I just start a new character and run through the campaign again, or is there another way to fix my situation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I’m planning to run through the campaign again when I get home tonight!

If you’re short on respecs, you could always spend some gold to grab more. Just find a way to get the right colors sorted out, and you’ll be back on track!
I feel your pain! Try looking for some cheap gear with the right colors. Running Blood Aqueducts should be doable even with basic gear, and you can score some decent stuff there.
You should respec after doing the merc lab and changing your ascendancy. Check the vendors in the acts for the colors you need—sometimes you can find them on the ground too! For respec, remember you need at least 20 points, as 10 are required for your first 2 ascendancy points. Also, you could use the crafting bench to help get those colors. If you’re struggling, try crafting on an evasion base for better results!
