I’m currently playing TerraFirmaGreg, which is a Minecraft modpack featuring over 200 mods, and I keep running into major issues with my game. It often crashes and locks up my entire computer, forcing me to restart it using the physical reset button. I’ve experimented with various settings, like adjusting RAM allocation and toggling shaders on and off, but nothing seems to help. The Minecraft logs don’t provide any useful insights either.
The problem starts when I load the game and my world—initially, everything runs smoothly with my FPS capped at 70. However, just a few seconds in, the game freezes and takes my PC with it. This happens at random moments, and there’s no noticeable activity that would cause a spike in usage. My RAM and GPU usage are around 70%, which I thought was acceptable. It’s frustrating because I didn’t experience these issues when I was on Windows, and my hardware specs should be sufficient. I’m using TerraFirmaGreg 0.9.2 on the Prism Launcher and am running Kubuntu 24.04 LTS. My specs include an AMD Ryzen 7, NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super, and 16 GB RAM. Any tips for fellow Minecraft modpack players would be greatly appreciated—does Linux need a special JRE, or would specific JVM arguments help?

Prism is definitely the way to go! But remember, TerraFirmaGreg is a hefty modpack, so any minor hiccup in your setup might become a huge issue. If you’re testing with a new world, keep in mind that the real stress test comes from complex setups, like multiblocks. It’s not as simple as loading a new world.
What launcher are you using? If you aren’t on Prism, I’d recommend switching to it. It worked great on my Steam Deck with 6GB allocated, and I had no crashes. You might also want to try creating a new map just to check if the problem is linked to a broken chunk around your current spawn. Just a thought!
First off, are you using Wayland or x11? A lot of users have reported better performance on x11, so if you haven’t switched yet, you might want to give it a shot. Also, how much RAM are you allocating to the game? It’s crucial to find the right balance, especially with modpacks like TerraFirmaGreg. By the way, when your PC freezes, do you really need to reboot it to ‘unfreeze’? That’s pretty serious if so.
