I’ve been going through the Dragonlance series again and it reminded me of the SAGA system that was used specifically in the Fifth Age. Has anyone here ever played it? If you did, I’d love to hear your thoughts—was it a fun experience?

The SAGA system was definitely unique! It was card-based, which was a bit different from traditional D&D. I remember it being all right, though it’s been a while so my memory is fuzzy. You’re right, though, Dragonlance’s older materials mainly stuck to regular D&D with its unique flavor.
I have the full SAGA collection, and let me tell you, it takes up way more space than you’d expect! If you’re diving into a game, grab some extra decks or look into house rules to swap cards out for dice. It’s a different beast compared to standard D&D; it can feel quick in progress, but oddly slow overall. Steve Kenson did some great work combining Dragonlance and Marvel rules on his blog, which is a must-read if you want to get into SAGA!
I haven’t played Dragonlance with it but I loved the Marvel version! The pacing felt alive because it all depended on the cards in hand, adding this thrilling tension.
Honestly, SAGA was groundbreaking for its time! I think it would fit in well with today’s storytelling-focused RPGs. The downside was the need for a custom deck to play, which made it a niche game. But if they reworked it now, using card mechanics could totally enhance gameplay.
Absolutely! The idea of using cards was pretty innovative, but I always felt they didn’t fully capitalize on it. If you think about it, card-based systems today work great!
I know what you mean! I loved the ads for it—they made it look super cool. It wasn’t until I got into it that I realized it was a card RPG!
Yeah, Fifth Age was the one with SAGA! But looking back, it seems like it was trying something new during a time when people were still very into classic D&D.
