I recently got locked out of my Microsoft account, which is tied to a phone number I can no longer access. When I switched my number with Verizon, it was completely deactivated, and contacting them hasn’t helped me regain access. Adding to my frustration, this Microsoft account is linked to my Windows laptop, and I’ve lost access to my Fortnite and Sims 4 accounts, which held hundreds of dollars in DLCs. I have no clue why my account was locked in the first place—it just happened randomly when I tried to play Xbox. I’ve filled out every recovery form from Microsoft multiple times without success. I can access my email connected to the account, but it’s pointless, and I can’t verify the card on file due to how long it’s been. Is there any way to recover my account, or even unlink my Fortnite account without using the Xbox account?

Having multiple backup recovery options is always a good strategy. I recommend contacting Epic Support directly about unlinking your Fortnite account. You’ll likely need to provide proof of ownership, like receipts for your purchases. Additionally, you might want to give Microsoft Support another go with the same information so they can better assist you. It’s a hassle, but it’s worth it! Good luck with your account recovery!
If you’ve been filling out the recovery form and not getting anywhere, it might just mean your details aren’t convincing enough for their automated system. Double-check that you’re providing any previous passwords and everything you can remember about the account—every little detail helps! Also, check out the guides on Microsoft’s support page that walk you through recovery options. As for Fortnite, check if you can follow the steps on Epic’s site for unlinking your accounts without access to your Xbox account.
Thanks for the tips! I’ve tried following the form guidelines exactly, but it seems like they just don’t want to let me back in. I’ll keep digging through the support pages, though.
Just be careful with the Microsoft Authenticator app if you decide to use it—it can lock you out even more in situations like yours! Definitely look for external backup options if you can.
