My girlfriend recently got into gaming after never having consoles, a PC, or internet access growing up. She just finished GTA V and absolutely loved it — she was really into the big open world and story, especially Trevor’s character. She liked how straightforward the gameplay was and the auto-aim helped her a lot. She mostly stuck to missions and didn’t dive deep into car customization or guns. Right now, she’s playing God of War Ragnarok. At first, she found the story a bit confusing since English isn’t her first language, and the camera movement made her dizzy. But she warmed up to it and is enjoying it, though not quite as much as GTA V. As she’s nearly done with GoW, I’m looking for some game recommendations that fit her style. She’s 26, fluent in Thai with moderate English, a civil engineer, and likes shooting and action games.

The Horizon games could be a perfect fit. They have a strong female protagonist and blend an interesting story with very accessible gameplay. Plus, their visuals and open world are stunning, which might appeal to her since she liked the vibrant GTA world.
I’d suggest checking out the Uncharted series. It’s got straightforward, exciting adventures with amazing cinematic story moments and gorgeous settings that are easier to follow. Also, Spider-Man (probably the PS4/PS5 one) is super fun and action-packed, and it might be right up her alley.
Cool, I’m going to watch some Uncharted reviews with her. Spider-Man sounds like it would be a blast too, definitely adding that to our list!
Since she loved GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a natural pick. It’s got a huge, beautiful open world like GTA but with more of a story-driven western feel. However, some people find the horseback travel a bit slow or repetitive, so if she prefers nonstop action, that might be a little less exciting for her.
Yeah, we watched some reviews and she’s a bit worried about the longer horseback parts since she really likes direct, fast-paced gameplay.
If she wants to try some zombie-themed open world games, Days Gone is a strong pick with tons of missions and action. Dying Light and Dead Island are also really cool, especially if she likes parkour-style movement and lots of zombie combat. The difficulty varies, but they generally strike a good balance for newcomers.
She’s been talking about wanting to try a zombie game, so I’ll check these out. Good to know the difficulty isn’t overwhelming for new players.
Maybe throw Cyberpunk 2077 into the mix? It’s full of action and has a deep story, kind of like GTA but set in a futuristic city. While it was a bit buggy at launch, most of those issues have been patched out now. Also, if she wants something more lighthearted and fun, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is super charming and action-packed without being intimidating.
I remember the botched launch hype, but it’s cool to hear the bugs are largely fixed. Ratchet and Clank sounds fun too — something less serious might be a good change of pace.
Good call! A female lead would be great. She loves characters like that, so I’m definitely putting Horizon on the list.
