Good Switch Game Suggestions for My Dad?

-

Father’s Day is almost here, and I’m on a mission to find the perfect Nintendo Switch games for my dad. He’s a bit picky about his gaming preferences, especially since he enjoys titles like Zelda and Final Fantasy. He loves open-world games where he can explore areas he’s not ‘supposed’ to access yet, focusing on both adventure and RPG experiences. His top three favorites are Tears of the Kingdom, Breath of the Wild, and Final Fantasy XII. Here are some key details I’m considering for my search:

– **Platform:** Must be on Switch
– **Genre:** Ideally Action/Adventure or RPG, with some puzzle elements if possible. I want to avoid platformers or cozy games. As funny as it would be to see him decorate his house in Animal Crossing, I don’t think he’d enjoy that.
– **Rating:** Should be Teen or under since he prefers avoiding any realistic violence, gore, or foul language. Family-friendly is the way to go!
– **Art Style:** Not too anime-styled. He wouldn’t be into games with scantily-clad anime characters, which is why Fire Emblem and Unicorn Overlord are off the list.
– **Modern Gameplay:** He has played older games like Super Mario Bros, but he prefers newer titles with updated graphics and gameplay mechanics.
– **Gameplay Focus:** He enjoys interesting mechanics, puzzle-solving, and exploration more than storylines, often checking out during cutscenes.
– **Challenge Level:** He loves a good challenge but prefers games that reward tactical thinking over fast reflexes since he’s not as quick as he used to be.
– **Couch Co-op:** It would be great if the game had couch co-op, but it’s not a necessity.

Additionally, he has enjoyed games like Skyward Sword, Hyrule Warriors, Final Fantasy IX, and Monster Hunter Stories 2, though Link’s Awakening didn’t impress him much. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since my dad introduced me to gaming with classics like Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy IX, and I want to keep the fun going with something new!

Hey, have you thought about “Immortals: Fenyx Rising”? It has that open-world exploration vibe that your dad might enjoy, plus some fun mechanics to mess around with.

I’d suggest “Mario Odyssey” as a fantastic pick! It’s got great gameplay and could provide a fun experience together, despite not being exactly RPG or Adventure.

RPGMaster32 -

If he enjoys Zelda, he might like “Echoes of Wisdom” and the HD version of “Link’s Awakening”. Also, consider some Mario games like “Mario Odyssey” or “3D All-Stars.” In the indie arena, Metroidvanias like “Hollow Knight” or “Ori & The Blind Forest” could be fun too!

AdventurerScribe -

In my opinion, “Tchia” could be a great fit! It allows for exploring like in Breath of the Wild and has unique mechanics like ‘haunting’ things. Just be aware that the story gets a bit darker, but the relaxing exploration aspect might really appeal to him!

TacticWizard -

“Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak” could be a great choice! It fits most of your criteria, except for couch co-op. It’s got rewarding gameplay that’s not overly dependent on reflexes, which sounds perfect for your dad’s gaming style.
