I’m currently about 30 to 40 hours into FF7 Rebirth and just reached the Gold Saucer. One of my main gripes with the original FF7 was that a big chunk of the game involved searching for Sephiroth, and so far, it feels like Rebirth is following that same pattern. I really enjoyed FF7 Remake, partly because Midgar is such a unique setting where a lot of relevant plot points unfold. Despite some slower moments, I thought the Remake did well in adapting the story, even with the whispers and some filler content that added character depth, like Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie, plus fun side activities like the underground battle ring.
But in Rebirth, the mandatory filler just feels bland. It’s like all the main quests are overshadowed by side quests that are actually more engaging. I want to dive into the side quests since they add personality to the characters, but I’m also eager to move along the main storyline. Unfortunately, that main story feels drawn out with little significant development, similar to my experience with the original, but it feels even longer now. So, does the story really pick up pace as the game progresses?

After the Gold Saucer, things definitely take a turn for the serious. The lighter moments seem to fade away a bit, but the development of character arcs becomes more prominent.
Absolutely, but this is just a midway point. The whole overarching story is just about searching for Sephiroth, so you have to bear with it a bit longer to see how it evolves further.
To be honest, Rebirth covers the chunk of OG where you’re searching for Sephiroth, which is inherently a bit slow. Personally, I enjoyed the side stories and character expansions in Rebirth. They kind of create that “friends on a road trip” vibe, which is something I felt was lacking in XV. But if you’re not into that chill atmosphere, the rest might feel somewhat stretched out for you.
I get your vibe; I started feeling that “open world fatigue” too. But don’t fret, the story picks up after you get past Gongaga, which I found to be the most tedious segment of the game. After that, it gets much better!
Costa Del Sol to Gongaga is definitely a rough patch. It’s filled with mini-games and slower plot reveals. Once you push through that part, though, things really start to roll again after the Gongaga boss fight, leading to a more engaging narrative.
I love the mini-games though, haha! They keep things entertaining for me.
I ditched the game at Gongaga for a couple months but loved it so much after I finally pushed through! Totally worth it.
