I’m running Bazzite with a Nvidia 3080 Ti using the latest drivers, and I’ve heard that Gamescope can enable HDR support, especially on Nvidia GPUs. I’m curious if HDR and Gamescope actually work together on Bazzite right now. If so, how can I set up Gamescope to get HDR working? I’m using the HTPC version of Bazzite and would love some guidance on this.

You might want to check out the official Gamescope GitHub and the Arch Wiki pages for detailed info. Even if you’re not on Arch, most of the setup instructions should be useful. From my experience with Bazzite, HDR tends to work automatically only when in Game Mode, but you might be able to configure it for desktop use as well. Also, there are community guides on making a custom Game Mode using Gamescope that should get HDR working reliably.
I’m not super impressed with HDR on Linux overall. On my OLED Steam Deck, HDR kinda works but it’s inconsistent depending on the hardware and software stack. Honestly, HDR on Linux feels hit or miss and sometimes not worth the hassle since it isn’t very reliable yet.
From what I gather, Gamescope definitely works if you’re using KDE as your desktop environment. KDE has the necessary integration to handle HDR info with Gamescope when gaming. For other desktop environments, it seems the integration isn’t quite there yet, so HDR through Gamescope might not work out of the box.
Good to know! So it might be a DE issue then. Might have to look into KDE or wait for better support on Bazzite’s default DE.
Thanks! I’ll look into those guides. For now, I’m sticking to Bazzite, but I might switch to SteamOS once it’s released, since I’ve heard that supports this stuff better.
