I’m new to MMOs and curious about how storytelling works in them, especially in Final Fantasy XIV and maybe FF11 too. Does the story in FF14 eventually come to a full conclusion, or does it just keep expanding endlessly? Are each of the expansions treated as separate stories with their own endings, or is it one continuous narrative that never really stops?

FF14’s story is pretty unique because each expansion (like Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, and Endwalker) has its own self-contained story arc that wraps up nicely. But these arcs are all connected by an overarching narrative that started with A Realm Reborn and actually concludes with Endwalker. So, Endwalker feels like the big finale to the original story. After that, the upcoming expansion Dawntrail is considered a fresh start, kind of like a new series continuing with the same characters but building something new from scratch.
That makes a lot of sense! So it’s like reading a series of books with a clear ending, then starting a sequel series. Definitely more approachable for someone new.
