My friend told me that I need to clean the dust out of my Xbox on a regular basis to stop it from breaking down, but this doesnt make any sense. I have had a PS2 for a long time and the fan at the back is completely covered with dust and it has never had an issue. Is there any truth behind this, does dust damage game consoles?

Dust does not directly harm any computer hardware, but it will have indirect affects. If water touches any computer hardware it can cause it to short circuit. Dust touching any computer components will do absolutely nothing, but if left alone for too long a large amount of dust can build up and this dust can obstruct the air flow. If the hot air is blocked by dust it will prevent it from escaping and can cause the system to overheat.
There is no need to go to any great lengths to remove all dust from a computer or game console, but you should try to make sure that all vents and cooling areas are kept clear so that air can flow freely through the system.
