I have never played the first game, but I would like to play the second. Is there anything about the first game that would make it a good idea for me to play before playing the new game?

There is nothing major in the first game that you couldn’t quickly catch up on with a youtube video. The first game is dirt cheap right now though, you could pick it up fairly easily if you wanted to at least experience what came first. In terms of the game itself, there is nothing really missable in it that makes it a requirement to play before playing the second game.
