After watching Doom: The Dark Ages gameplay where the Doom Guy uses a mech, I couldn’t help but feel let down. Often, mechs in games not centered around them seem cumbersome, lack the thrill of power, and slow down the action. For instance, series like Armored Core or Titanfall excel because they’re designed around mechs. However, when games include them just as a side element, the experience tends to fall flat. Typically, you’re battling opponents of similar size, so the scale of epicness is missing. Does anyone think there’s a game where a brief mech section significantly enhances the experience? Or are they frequently underwhelming in non-mech-centric games?

Counter Point: The mechs in Hell Divers 2 feel great. Not a mech game at all, and they got them right, eventually.
I remember strongly disliking the mech bits in Quake 4 and FEAR 2. It tends to be a bunch of flashy nonsense to knuckle down and grind through.
I disagree, I’m always stoked for random mech segments that just come out of nowhere.
That’s fair! Each person likes different things. What’s a game where you liked a section like that?
I would tend to agree, but I think Halo did a decent job with it.
Halo 4.
Which Halo had a mech? It’s been so long since I’ve played those. I have the Master Chief collection on my PC so maybe I’ll hop back in and check it out.
Imo giant enemies in most games suck unless you get equally sized somehow.
Yeah, I wouldn’t say the final boss in Doom Eternal sucked exactly, but just being a huge damage sponge did make him more annoying than fun.
Somehow, OP reminded me of The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.
Interesting. I haven’t played in a while, so I’ve only used that first one they put in, and it always seemed kind of useless, at least if you were fighting the robots that could shoot at you. You couldn’t evade so you took way more damage, and when the mech died, so did you. I’ll have to try them out now. But while that’s sort of the same, it’s not really what I was meaning. The mechs there are still on the same scale as your character and the enemies. I was thinking more about the massive ones. The ones there are more just weaponized vehicles.
