Hey everyone! I’ve been diving deep into the Final Fantasy series since 2020 and am now gearing up to replay FF XIV. I’ve completed Shadowbringers and I’m ready to jump into Endwalker and Dawntrail, but I want to redo the entire game first. So here’s my dilemma: I understand that A Realm Reborn (ARR) is essentially FF XIV 2.0 and that the original version (1.0) was pretty different. My main question is, do I need to know the story from 1.0 to fully grasp what happens in 2.0 and beyond? Are there any great YouTube videos that summarize the 1.0 storyline? Thanks for any guidance!

1.0 isn’t included in ARR, but it’s not crucial to get into the game. The main events of 1.0 provide context but don’t impact gameplay significantly. You’ll be fine starting fresh with ARR!
The events of 1.0 are indeed part of the backstory in A Realm Reborn. While some key details are presented through cutscenes, it might help to immerse yourself more if you know the backstory. Here’s a video that does a great job of summarizing it: [this link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEoaGT-yDig). Definitely check it out!
Great answers here! Just to add, the first scene of ARR does reference the end of 1.0, so it acts a bit like a prequel. It might enhance your understanding of the factions and some plot points, like the tensions between the Grand Companies and Garlean colonies, but skipping it won’t ruin your experience.
You really don’t need to worry about 1.0. Most players skipped it since it was such a different experience, and the developers recognized this. Everything important is neatly explained in the main ARR narrative.
