Hey everyone! I’m looking for some clarity on how the ‘Fights on Death’ mechanic interacts with the Big Guns Never Tire (BGNT) rule in Warhammer 40k. Specifically, I want to know if there’s any official guidance about using BGNT during fights when a model is in engagement range. For context, I played against my friend’s Leman Russ Commander, and when it was destroyed by my Wolfguard, there was confusion about whether its ‘Fights on Death’ ability could trigger. I think we concluded it wouldn’t work since BGNT requires it to be your shooting phase. So basically, if the tank gets taken out in melee, it can’t shoot back since it has no pistols. Is there any official source that confirms or clarifies this? Thanks for any help!

There’s actually a FAQ from Astra Militarum that addresses this! It states that if it’s not your shooting phase and the model is destroyed outside that phase, it can’t make any shooting attacks while engaged in combat. So yes, you’re right: without BGNT applying, the tank wouldn’t be able to shoot if it dies during combat. Also, keep in mind that pistol rules only apply in your shooting phase too, so that wouldn’t change anything here!
You might want to check this FAQ for more details [here](https://assets.warhammer-community.com/eng_wh40k_codex_astra_militarum_faq_jan25-a43msfsguf-qatxsodvt3.pdf). I didn’t spot the specific point you’re asking about either, but it doesn’t sound like BGNT would let a tank shoot after a ‘Fights on Death’ trigger if it wasn’t its shooting phase. It’s a bit of a bummer for Tank Commanders that get caught in a melee!
