Is there any point in killing the crimson zombies? I have killed loads of them now and they just keep coming back. Rather than wasting so much ammo, i have started running away from them but its also causing me some headaches too.

After you take a Crimson Head out, he won’t come back to haunt you. But if you keep running into them, it means regular zombies you didn’t deal with properly have turned. Burn them or shoot their heads clean off in one go. Otherwise, its smart to dodge some fights to save ammo if possible.
If you leave a zombie corpse and come back later, it mightve turned into a Crimson Head, which is what might be confusing you. Just burn the corpses with kerosene or use the headshot technique to reduce their numbers. If the head explodes, its dead for good and if you burn it, its also dead for good. If you just shoot them til they fall over, they will keep coming back, which sounds like what you have been doing.
