I’m curious about how sanctioned psykers are processed. Do they all take that notorious Black Ship route to Terra for assignment, or are there alternative training facilities that might sort out the more stable psykers before they make the trip? I imagine this could help lessen the load on the Black Ships and allow for a faster journey to the Emperor.

Not every psyker goes through the Black Ship route. While it’s true that a lot of them do, especially those deemed unstable or weak, there are places like the Psykana Scholastica spread throughout the galaxy that assess and train psykers. The stronger, stable psykers might get opportunities to serve as Astropaths or in other capacities without the need for a lengthy trip to Terra.
From what I’ve read, yes, almost all psykers collected by the Black Ships are sent to Terra, but it can vary. Some are filtered out for training in different academies before they’re sent to the Emperor, mainly to assess if they’re fit for service as battle psykers or navigators. It’s a complicated system, with a lot of nuances depending on the local chapters and their needs.
Definitely! And it’s interesting how the lore sometimes shows secret psykers not going through the ships at all due to local politics or other reasons.
Actually, the majority likely do end up on the Black Ships. Many are far too weak or unstable to really serve a function beyond being sacrificed to the Golden Throne. Those who have potential but aren’t stable enough usually get sent to Terra to be Soul-Bound, which requires being on the Holy World. So, while some might get filtered out, most are still sent to Terra.
True, but also remember that some of the strongest psykers might not need to go through Terra at all. Depending on their chapter’s rules, certain Astartes can recruit directly and bypass the whole system.
Exactly! It seems like some chapters also recruit unsanctioned psykers directly from their homeworlds to become Librarians, rather than sending them off on the Black Ships.
