I recently bought a 7800x3D for about $380, and I have the option to return it. I’ve also got a 5080, but I skipped the 5070 Ti because I wanted better performance. Now, I’m second-guessing my purchase. Should I just spend the extra $100 and get the 9800x3D instead?

If returning it doesn’t cost you anything, why not go for the 9800x3D if you really want it? Just make sure it’s in stock before you return the 7800x3D, or you might be stuck waiting around.
If your setup is geared for 1440P or 4K, the difference won’t be as noticeable. Also, check out some comparison videos; they can help clarify if those frame drops really matter to you at your resolution.
I get your concern about saving $100, but considering the price of newer GPUs, why risk performance? If a better CPU makes you feel better about your rig, go ahead and swap it out! You’ll enjoy those extra frames.
If you’re someone who really obsesses over those 1% lows, you might appreciate the upgrade. I noticed a smooth boost in performance when I upgraded to the 9800x3D. It runs cooler too!
Honestly, I think the 9800x3D is worth that extra $100. But if you end up sticking with the 7800x3D, don’t stress too much. It’s a solid CPU and you probably won’t notice a significant difference in most games.
