I’m building my first PC and I snagged a Ryzen 5 9600X along with a motherboard and some RAM sticks for $350. Now that everything is here, I’m starting to wonder if I should have splurged a bit more on the 7800X3D, which costs about $700. I’m mainly playing competitive Fortnite, so did I mess up?

As long as you’re not rocking something insane like a 4090 or a 5090, you shouldn’t feel bad about your purchase at all.
Nah, I wouldn’t sweat it! The 9600X is a solid choice. Give it a spin with Fortnite first. If you find you really want more juice later, you could always flip it and grab a 7800X3D or a 9800X3D down the line.
The 9600X is one of the better CPUs for gaming, only really outclassed by the X3Ds. You’ll do just fine with it! And don’t forget, Fortnite runs smoothly even on older systems.
Honestly, you got a great deal! The 9600X is a fantastic CPU and should serve you well in gaming.
I’ve recently used a 7500F on a 1440p 360Hz screen, and honestly, it was pretty smooth. Your 9600X should be on par performance-wise. The 7800X3D is technically better, especially with those ‘1% lows’ in mind, but you’d likely not notice a big difference unless you’re on a top-tier setup.
