I’m designing a TTRPG where divine casters need to earn Devotion to recharge their magic through specific forms of worship instead of just gaining spellcasting resources daily. I’ve brainstormed some options like basic prayers and advanced ceremonies, but I’m looking for more unique or engaging ways for players to express their devotion to their deities. Some of my initial ideas include prayer, ceremony, and hymns, but I want to expand that list. What unique forms of worship can you all suggest?

Consider adding behavioral worship options. For example, characters could gain devotion by fulfilling certain roles related to their deities, like a priest of wealth needing to make beneficial deals. This encourages roleplay and diverse gameplay.
One neat idea could be incorporating fasting, ritual sacrifices, or even drug use for enhanced devotion, similar to the Oracle of Delphi. These can represent deep connections to the divine, especially for cult-like worship.
In addition to sacrifices, you could use ‘tithing’ where characters give away possessions or money for their deity’s favor. Something drastic could be associated with evil gods, perhaps even sacrificial offerings.
Vows can also be a cool mechanic! Imposing personal restrictions, like a vow of silence or not using metal, could enhance devotion by encouraging specific roleplay while providing mechanical benefits.
That’s a creative angle! Vows like not lying or remaining non-violent could add extra depth to character interactions.
Yeah, fasting could connect to your game’s mechanics. You might have buffs or debuffs tied to eating or not, and maybe create a “Fellowship” idea where sharing meals with others counts as worship too!
