Hey fellow deck enthusiasts! I’m wrapping up Ghost of Tsushima and am thinking about diving into Final Fantasy VII Rebirth next. However, I’ve heard mixed reviews about it running smoothly on the Steam Deck. I’m curious if anyone here has hands-on experience with it. I’m also aware of the new frame generation mod—does it make a difference? Should I just give it a shot on the Steam Deck, or would it be better to play it elsewhere? Looking forward to your insights!

It really comes down to what ‘running poorly’ means to you. For me, the gameplay is fine, although the graphics aren’t top-notch. Other than a few areas, lag isn’t too bothersome, and it hasn’t disrupted battles or mini-games, which is crucial. I haven’t even used performance mods. Occasionally, I notice some broken geometry, like in the first town, but it’s not a dealbreaker for me. Your experience might vary, though.
I haven’t personally tried it on a Steam Deck, but I’ve watched several videos. If you own a PlayStation 5, that might be a better option for performance. On Steam Deck, it seems to be playable at 30FPS on the lowest settings with 66% resolution scaling. I suggest using a mod that adds XESS or FSR for upscaling since you’ll be playing at a lower resolution.
There’s plenty of content out there discussing how FF7 Rebirth runs on the Steam Deck. I recommend researching to determine what ‘poor performance’ looks like to you. Check out YouTube for gameplay videos or visit a few sites that analyze game performance on the Deck. That way, you can make an informed decision.
