I’m trying to figure out how Grimwild and Chasing Adventure stack up against each other. They both seem to cover similar ground, but I’m curious about their distinct features. Besides the fact that one is powered by the Apocalypse (PbTA) and the other is inspired by Blades in the Dark, what key focuses do each of these games have? What kind of play experiences do they encourage? And ultimately, which game do you prefer, and why?

I’ve recently gone through this choice myself. My players were having a tough time with the 13th Age system we were using, so I considered switching to either Chasing Adventure or Grimwild. I originally thought Chasing Adventure would be the winner since I liked what I saw in its Kickstarter campaign. But after some research, I felt that Chasing Adventure is more suited for dramatic storytelling, while Grimwild leans towards fun and chaos. The way Grimwild handles penalties is also less punishing, which might suit my group better. So, after one session, everyone preferred sticking with Grimwild since it kept their characters’ essence intact and the gameplay felt more engaging.
Thanks for the detailed insights! Super helpful for making an informed choice.
I’m curious to see how your thoughts evolve after you’ve played both!
