I’ve been playing for about 1 year and 4 months, mostly focusing on battleships, so I don’t have much experience with cruisers or destroyers. I currently have the Salem as a tier 10 cruiser, and while I don’t have a tier 10 destroyer, I really enjoy playing the Cossack. My other tier 10 ships include the Yamato, Schlieffen, and U-4501. Now I want to start a new grind and I’m stuck choosing between the Daring line and the Petropavlovsk. Do you think the Daring line plays similarly to the Cossack? Which one would you recommend for someone with my background? I’d love to hear the opinions of experienced players. Thanks!

Daring is a super solid all-rounder. She’s hard to bully but can’t just bulldoze everything either — think of her as a jack of all trades, master of none, which is a good thing! She’s got decent guns to fight other DDs, torps to threaten big ships, good concealment to avoid surprise attacks, and some great consumables like hydro and multiple smokes that help you get out of tough spots. If you get flanked by a sneaky DD, pop hydro and chase him down. If planes come, smoke up and escape. Got caught by a pure gunboat? Smoke again, hydro again, and fight. Super comfy and flexible ship to play.
Yeah, the Daring line is pretty similar to the Cossack – not identical, but close enough that your experience will carry over nicely. If you enjoyed the Cossack, you’ll feel right at home with Daring.
I’d say stick with the Daring line. Since it plays pretty similarly to the Cossack, you’ll have an easier time adjusting. Also, grind the lower tiers up to 8 on each tech tree first to get a feel for what style fits you best before committing to one for tiers 9 and 10.
Honestly, if you like the Russian cruisers and their playstyle, Petropavlovsk is a beast, but it can get a little dull since it’s all about soaking damage and winning those slugfests. Plus, it’s banned in competitive because it’s so strong, so you know it’s got some serious power. But if you want something fun and versatile, Daring’s the better pick.
Quick rundown on Petropavlovsk:
Pros:
– Guns have crazy high muzzle velocity and insane penetration, making her effective at all ranges, even at 20km she punches way above her weight.
– The aft turret can fire 360°, so you can keep firing as you turn.
– Super low profile means she’s really hard to citadel, and has strong deck armor that makes her hardy against HE from smaller calibers.
– Battleships gotta be careful aiming her nose for citadel hits because of an icebreaker bow.
Cons:
– Not very stealthy, you get spotted easily even by smaller ships and sometimes by battleships.
– Radar is more of a deterrent than a true spotting tool, only gives you brief warning and a chance to shoot back.
– Big turning circle and slow rudder shift, she handles more like a battleship in that regard.
– Since she’s a big threat, people focus fire on her a lot.
– HP is cruiser-like, so she can’t really soak forever.
Overall, she’s a tanky monster but a bit clunky to maneuver and less sneaky.
And for Daring:
Pros:
– Really good stealth for a gunboat, only a few other guns-focused DDs are harder to spot.
– The smoke is excellent with short cooldown, decent duration, and you have plenty of them, so you can be mobile and aggressive.
– Torpedoes are pretty usable — fast and can hit for serious damage; you can even fire them in singles to be precise.
– Comes with hydro, which is rare for a British DD, great for spotting torpedoes and subs within 3km.
– Has a heal plus smoke and hydro, so can survive longer in DD fights.
– AP shells do good damage to most targets, and HE can pressure enemy damage control, though that takes some practice to balance.
Cons:
– Torps have limited firing arcs, so you lose some side when launching.
– She’s an AP-focused DD but her HE pen is lacking, so you’ll want to manage switching ammo carefully.
– Not super fast for a destroyer and lacks speed boost, so some cruisers and DDs can catch you if you’re not careful.
All in all, Daring is a nimble, versatile, and comfy ship if you want a DD that can adapt and stay in the fight longer.
If you’re aiming to learn how to really win games as a destroyer, Daring and her related ships are great. They’re solid gunboats with usable torps and are great at contesting caps. Petropavlovsk is busted with insane tankiness and lets you get away with crazy aggressive moves, but it won’t really teach you how to play average heavy cruisers since it’s kinda in a class of its own.
Wow, thanks for the detailed breakdown! Sounds like a very unique ship but with some handling challenges.
