I’m trying to decide between two laptops: one with an 8GB 4070m and another with a 16GB 3080m. They’re priced similarly, so I’m wondering which one would be more future-proof. Any thoughts?

If you’re into the latest tech, the 4070m has frame generation capabilities, which could be pretty awesome. However, it’s worth noting that not all games might support frame generation in the future. You could find the 4080m with its 16GB of VRAM still providing a boost as games demand more memory.
I’d go with the 3080m since it comes with 16GB of VRAM. More VRAM is typically good for future-proofing, especially if you plan to play new games with high settings. Plus, rumors are floating around that Nvidia might bring their fancy tech to the 3000 series, which could be beneficial.
I personally think the 3080m with 16GB will last longer. Frame generation is nice, but it eats a lot of VRAM and might not be supported by all games. Upscaling with more VRAM tends to hold up better for the long haul.
Honestly, the 4070m’s frame generation is cool but it’s pretty demanding in terms of VRAM and base FPS. As new games start using more VRAM, especially with ray tracing, the 16GB on the 3080m will be a plus. Future-proofing often leans on having more VRAM, so the 3080m seems like a safer bet in that respect.
