Hey everyone, I’m really struggling here! I recently had to send my Steam Deck in for repairs due to a faulty USB port, which took a month for Valve to process. They ended up telling me it wasn’t covered under warranty, and I ended up paying for a fix from a third-party service. The Deck worked fine before sending it in, but now that I finally have it back, I can’t get past an update error during the initial setup. It says, “Update Error: An error was encountered during the update process. please try again.”
I’ve already tried re-imaging the Deck multiple times with new bootable USBs, checked the BIOS time, and even attempted updates on different Wi-Fi frequencies and mobile hotspots. One time it actually booted into Steam OS after signing in, but it reverted back to the error on restart.
I’ve done everything I can think of, including checking for loose cables since I suspect the third-party repair might not have done a thorough job. The system returns an error code stating there was an installation error while updating. I’m at my wit’s end! Does anyone have any suggestions?

It sounds like you’re really having a tough time with that repair service! I’ve heard several complaints about Valve’s third-party repair setup. Since you’ve already done quite a bit, I’d recommend checking for loose connections, particularly around the SSD, as it might have been reassembled poorly. If you feel comfortable enough, maybe pop it open and give it a look? Sometimes things can get knocked loose during the repair process.
Yeah, I had the same situation. When I opened mine, I found a cable that was partially unplugged. Just be careful when you go in, though!
