I’m trying to remember a Pokémon game I played at a friend’s place ages ago. It was on one of the older consoles, probably something like the GameCube. In the game, you played as the Pokémon themselves in a battle arena against friends. The battles felt more like what you’d see in Mortal Kombat rather than the typical turn-based style of the main series games. You could move around, but I don’t recall having many options for actions while walking. Also, I only remember seeing generation 1 Pokémon in it—though that could be just because I was a kid and only recognized those characters.

You might be thinking of Pokémon Colosseum. I get that it was on the GameCube, but it did have some arena battles, even though you didn’t really play as the trainers. That said, I don’t think it fits your memory of the battling style.
Have you looked into Type: Wild? It’s a fan game that came out around that time and mimics the fighting style of Mortal Kombat. You might also want to consider Pokémon Battle Revolution, which had some similar elements, but again, it’s on the Wii.
It sounds a lot like Pokémon Rumble on the Wii! It had some similar mechanics, but I get that you said it felt more like a console from before that. Still, it might be worth checking out if your memory was a bit off.
Yeah, I thought that too, but I remember there being a 1v1 option with friends. Wasn’t sure if Rumble had that.
It’s definitely not Colosseum I played. You only fought as the Pokémon, no trainers involved.
